Pipe Dreams

Hidden in plain sight in the beautiful Trossachs in Scotland is the Loch Katrine Aqueduct carrying clean water from Loch Katrine down to Glasgow, over 30 miles away.  This massive engineering feat was undertaken in Victorian times and is still the main water source in Glasgow today.   Powered entirely by gravity, it drops only 7m from Loch Katrine to the final reservoir outside Milngavie.  Most of the aqueduct is underground, but there are still signs of its presence if you know where to look and you can trace its route through mountains, across valleys and temperate rainforest across the Highland Boundary Fault towards the metropolis.

Using cyanotyped fabric with images relating to the Aqueduct, it has been cut into fragments and re-pieced to make the quilt.  The red lines over the top relate to the cross-section of the pipeline as it runs down to the city.
